Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield
The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is 2,965 acres and was the site of the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War. It is a day use park (open dawn to dusk) and offers many opportunities to learn about Kennesaw’s historical significance during the Civil War by visiting the museum, walking the grounds and participating in a 4-stop self-guided tour. The park is a popular location for picnics and for those who enjoy hiking, exercise and exploring outdoors.
What You Need to Know:
- Entrance to the park is FREE and parking is FREE
- Hours for Parking are posted on gates and change for the time of year – Times are strictly enforced and cars left after allowed hours will be ticketed and towed
- Parking can get crowded during peak hours so be prepared to be patient
- The Visitors Center is staffed from 9 am to 5 pm daily and can offer maps and brochures and answer questions
- Dogs are allowed but MUST be on leashes – Bags are provided to clean up after your pet
- Bikes are NOT allowed on the natural trails but may be ridden on the paved road that goes up the mountain though motor vehicles have the right-of-way
- Relic hunting and metal detecting are NOT allowed
- There is no food available for purchase at the park but there are dedicated picnic areas
- There is a self-guided tour with 4 historical stops – you can pick up a free map in the Visitors Center
- Hiking to the top offers a gain of 708 feet in 1.2 miles and a gorgeous view
- Vehicles are allowed to drive to the top of the mountain via Kennesaw Mountain Drive Monday through Friday – On weekends there is a shuttle bus ride to the top available for a small fee (Ages 12+ $3.00, 6 – 11 $1.50 and 5 and under are FREE)
- Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park is a Federal park and is guided by both federal and state laws
- The park is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day
The park also offers Junior Ranger programs, Junior Civil War Historian programs as well as special events such as guided walking tours and lectures so be sure to check the battlefield’s website for details and schedules.
